College life isn’t cheap. And so, it would certainly help if you could bring in a little bit of extra money, right? Fortunately, today that’s a lot easier to do than it used to be, as the online working space has created a huge opportunity for students to make that extra bit of cash that will help them move from surviving into living.
Now, we all know about the more common places to make money online. You can play poker, write for magazines, or perhaps use one of the big online freelancing platforms, for example. Still, there have to be better ways than that to make money, right?
That’s right. There are new opportunities constantly cropping up. Let’s discuss a few of them here.
Are you a bit of a jack of all trades and do you frequently like to change things up? Then consider becoming a virtual assistant. Virtual assistants do a lot of stuff. For example, they might send out emails, write out dictated texts, set meetings, or arrange travel itineraries.
Yes, that does sound a bit like a secretary. It is a bit like that, except that you don’t just work for one company or boss. Instead, you can have as many of them as you like and thereby make as much as you like.
In some cases, you might need to keep some kind of regular hours, but that can work fine too. Just make sure that you work for somebody in a different time zone!
And the best part? This experience can translate into an actual job right at the end of things. Neat, right?
Work on Fiverr.com
The key to Fiverr.com is what is called the ‘micro gig’. These are small tasks that don’t make you that much money, but because they don’t cost you a lot of time, it can still really add up. What’s more, as many of these jobs aren’t that difficult, there is a real paternity to get started in te gig economy here.
Then, as you gain more experience you can start working for one of the clients more regularly, start your own business or find clients that want more and pay more in order to get it. This really is one of the best ways to get started, whether you want to stay at home or travel the world.
Even better, keep it up and you won’t have to look for a job after college – you’ll already have one!
Sell stock photos
Are you good with a camera? Then why not try to sell some stock photos? The big stock photo websites are always looking for new content that they can put up on their sites. Then you’ll get a royalty every time somebody buys that picture.
Now, that royalty isn’t necessarily that much, but because pictures can be sold multiple times and you can have a lot of pictures up there, over time that can really start to build to some serious dough that can continue coming your way for years to the future.
Yes, that’s right, they call that passive income. And it does mean that you can make money while you sleep. Neat, right?
Work for an essay writing service
If you’re further along in your education and you’ve got a natural knack for writing academic essays, then why not join an essay writing service? They’re all over the internet and they can be great money makers if you know what you’re doing and how to put together a reference table.
Even better, the experience you pick up here can really be useful if you want to work in academia long term, as the more practice you get, the better you’ll get. So why not make money giving people college homework help?
Sell your artistic creation on etsy.com
If academics is not where it’s at for you and you’re a more creative type, then consider turning to etsy.com instead. This is a marketplace for the creatively and alternatively minded and is a wonderful place for you to sell your most artistic creations.
What’s more, you’ll be able to get some direct feedback into which of your creations people actually like. After all, friends telling you that you’re a wonderful artist is one thing, but strangers buying what you’re creating is something else entirely.
So go on, give it a try.
Note, good photography skills are a must on this site, so do make sure that you’ve got a decent camera or a friend who is trying to help you out in that regard.
Have you been writing a blog for a while and have you got a decent following? Then why not consider affiliate marketing? This is where you list products on your site and if people follow the link and buy the product, you get a little bit of money for that.
The great thing about affiliate marketing is that you decide what products that you talk about. In this way, you’re not selling your readers short at all. Quite the contrary, you can advise them on products that you yourself are impressed by and that you use.
And as the affiliate payment comes out of the pocket of the company and not the pocket of your readers, that means it really is a great opportunity.
Of course, make sure you fully disclose what you’re doing. People deserve to know when you’re making money from them – even if it doesn’t actually cost them anything.
Teach students in less advantaged countries
There are a lot of universities out there that probably aren’t as good as yours. The teachers might not be as good and the education standards might not be so high. The result? A lot of students in less-developed countries are looking for guidance and information from some of the better universities to get that edge that they otherwise wouldn’t have.
And so, why not give it to them? Use programs like skype or google hangouts to spend a few hours each week discussing topics that you’ve already mastered. This can give that student insight that they otherwise might never have had. It might also give them helpful lessons in the use of English, which is the lingua franca of the business world!
As for you, you’ll be making some money, helping a fellow person out and might even end up with a better grasp of the material as teaching is the best way to learn.
Sell tickets online
As a student, you can often get tickets for events way before the public does. So why not turn that into a small business? Of course, you’ll want to stay below the radar, but if you do it cleverly and know who is interested in these kinds of things, it’s easy money.
Heck, you can even do this risk-free by first finding the customers and only then getting the tickets. Put a so many percent premia on top and bob’s your uncle.
So go on, reach out to friends and family, pass them a schedule of the upcoming events – like off-Broadway theater shows – and see how many tickets you can pick up! Do note, for this work you will need to have enough money to buy those tickets, to begin with, so you’ll need a little bit of seed money.
Also, to allay suspicion make sure you go to some of these events.
Do some online surveys
There are plenty of websites out there that will pay you to do surveys. For example, Pinecone will pay you for doing surveys. You can also use the points you collect to get prizes.
One thing to note, there are ‘research firms’ out there that tell you how you can make a fortune filling in surveys with them if you just pay this one-time joining fee. Don’t do it. They’re most likely to be scams.
Research companies already struggle enough to get enough people to take part in their surveys. They most certainly wouldn’t need you to pay to do so. So if that’s what they ask for, move on, move on!
And really, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There are plenty of other things that you can do out there. Just do a search with whatever you’re good at with the words ‘make money’ and plenty of results should pop up. No, not all of them will be realistic, but if you search long enough you’re going to find something eventually.
I mean, if computer gaming is a profession people can do, then why not anything else, right? So go on. Take a look. Typing in a few searches won’t hurt you and you never know what you will find. The internet is creating opportunities that we couldn’t even dream about a few years ago.
Just make sure it’s not a scam before you sign on. Because that would be really counterproductive.
